Jazz, be-bop in Summer Quarter Concert

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present its Summer Quarter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College.

Admission is free to the concert on the campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The PC Jazz Ensemble features Robbin Eaves on vocals with an eight-piece jazz band, according to a news release.

Eaves will sing the bebop classic “Bernie’s Tune” by pianist Bernie Miller.

The lyrics are by Leiber & Stoller of “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” fame.

She also will sing the Jimmy Rowles classic, “The Peacocks,” with words later added by Norma Winstone.

The ensemble also will welcome a special guest on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ed Donohue.

Donohue serves as director of bands at Stevens Middle School.

The band will perform Jimmy Van Heusen’s ballad “Like Someone in Love” in a new instrumental arrangement by David P. Jones, the director of PC Jazz Ensemble.

Also heard will be music by Sonny Rollins, J. J. Johnson, Kenny Dorham, Benny Golson, Joe Zawinul, Walter Davis, Jr. and two brand-new originals by Jones.

The performers in this band come from Port Angeles, Sequim, Joyce, Quilcene and Port Townsend.

For more information, contact Jones at 360-417-6405 or email at djones@pencol.edu.
