Boffer swordplay

PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Library will host boffer swordplay at 3 p.m. today.

The free program is geared for children 6 to 18 at the library, 620 Cedar Ave.

Boffer swordplay is a physical sport with light contact, similar in intensity to soccer and a pillow fight.

Boffers, constructed of foam-wrapped PVC pipe, duct tape and imagination, are used in live-action role-playing games and mock combat.

Chaz Hillyard coaches participants and boffers are provided.

PORT HADLOCK — A free auto clinic for all ages is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Benefit concert

PORT HADLOCK — A concert to benefit Puerto Rico hurricane relief is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.

A $10 donation is suggested for the concert at Community United Methodist Church at 130 Church Lane.

The men’s ensemble group Singers In The Rain and Friends will perform music from several different genres.

PORT TOWNSEND — A hybrid and electric vehicle exhibit is set to begin today at 1 p.m.

Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Chrysler hybrid and electric vehicles will be on display and available to test-drive at the Northwest Maritime Center at 431 Water St.

The vehicles will be available until 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Wilder Auto will provide information and answer questions about the latest news and developments in battery technology, recharging options, mileage range, cost benefits and availability of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Veterans bell ringing

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County veterans will hold their bi-annual Veterans Memorial Bell Ringing Ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony on the front steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse at 1820 Jefferson St.

To honor the Jefferson County veterans and servicemen and women who have died in the previous six months, each veteran’s name is read with the branch he or she served, any conflict and awards received, followed by the ringing of a bell.

After all the names are recognized, a piper plays “Amazing Grace” and The Marvin G. Shields Memorial American Legion No. 26 presents a three-volley rifle salute followed by a bugler playing taps.

The state National Guard folds and presents the flag.

PORT TOWNSEND — A forum titled “Car-free PT” addressing the city’s changing transportation climate will be held at 7 p.m. Monday.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 2333 San Juan Ave.

Speakers will include county commissioner Kate Dean; transit advocate Samantha Thomas; and Port Townsend High School senior Joe Calodich.

A community feedback and brainstorming discussion will follow the speaker’s presentations.

The goal of the forum is to inspire members of the community to use more modes of transportation such as walking, bicycling and transit, in addition to car-trips to protect quality of life, the city’s small town ambiance and seaside environment, according to a news release.

Documentary screening

PORT ANGELES — Alexander Hallet will visit Holy Trinity Lutheran Church to screen his documentary about his year-long study of orphaned children and their caregivers in South Africa at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The culmination of his project titled, “Moja Maisha: South Africa” will be shown free of admission at the church at 301 E. Lopez Ave.

Donations are encouraged. Proceeds will benefit the ongoing work of Nkosi Johnson’s Haven, a shelter in Johannesburg, South Africa, that provides holistic care and support to HIV-AIDS infected mothers, their children and orphans.
