Dahlia tubers topic at ‘Work to Learn’ party

SEQUIM — The Sequim Botanical Garden Society will host a “Work to Learn” Party demonstration at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The demonstration will be at the Terrace Garden just north of the band shell at Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 S. Blake Ave.

Lee Bowen, the group’s dahlia expert, will present “The Selection and Planting of Dahlia Tubers.” Bowen has been planting dahlias at the garden for about 11 years and at Bellevue Botanical Garden before that.

Bowen will talk about the secret to growing healthy dahlia plants that thrive and bloom into October, and will encourage people to work alongside the society volunteers to plant tubers in the garden’s dahlia beds.

A “Work to Learn” demonstration is held each month during the growing season.

A nonprofit organization, the Sequim Botanical Garden Society is a volunteer partner with the city of Sequim that provides education and visual demonstrations of what can be done in home gardening with research-based horticultural practices.
