A free concert at Fort Flagler, a Picnic on the Pier in Port Townsend and a fundraiser for Peninsula Friends of Animals in Port Angeles are among the upcoming activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

NORDLAND — The Friends of Fort Flager will host a free concert featuring The Delta Rays at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Meet the Music

PORT HADLOCK — Youth ages 6 to 11 are invited to learn about 20th century musicians during the first installment of “Jazz, Blues, Country, Folk, Rock and Roll!” at 2 p.m. Monday.

On Mondays until Aug. 6, a few artists from a musical style will be explored, then attendees will create art as a response.

Boat tours

PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to take a tour on the Martha J, a 1984 24-foot motor launch today and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Those interested are asked to meet on the floating dock in front of the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

Tours are by donation and take about 30 minutes.

Tours also will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The service is on a first-come, first-served basis, with a six-person capacity.

Kiwanis Club Tiki Party

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Kiwanis Club will host its annual Tiki Party on Saturday.

The party will have an auction and dance party with party band Freddy Pink.

The show will be at the American Legion Post hall at 209 Monroe St.

Auction items will include Great trips Europe destinations, cruises, trips for local whale watching and golf trips.

Pier picnic

PORT TOWNSEND — Swan School will fete 35 years of independent education with a free “Picnic on the Pier” from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Members are invited to the family-friendly fourth annual picnic at Pope Marine Plaza, 1000 Madison St.

Featured will be activities gigantic bubbles, pinwheel crafting, a dance party and a silent auction.

Music will be provided by the Swan School Percussion Ensemble, The Merrymakers, and school alumni.

At 4 p.m., a gourmet picnic offering a grilled wild Alaskan salmon sandwich, grass-fed beef burger or a lentil burger, with local greens, and a decadent brownie on the side will be available for $15.

Kids’ picnic bento boxes will be available for $5.

Proceeds will benefit the school’s experiential learning programs.

Dance, potluck

PORT TOWNSEND — An English country dance will be held at the RoseWind Common House from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

A $5 donation is suggested for the dance at RoseWind, 3131 Haines St.

Nan Evans will lead the dance, with the Rosewood Country Dance Band providing the music.

Following the dance, a potluck will be held.

The facility is fragrance-free and no street shoes are allowed, with the exception of dance shoes or slippers, event organizers said.

Book reading

PORT TOWNSEND — Former Port Townsend resident artist Galen Garwood will read from his newly released book, “Sell the Monkey, a Memoir” at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Members of the public are invited to the reading at City Council Chambers above the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St.

During his 20 years in Port Townsend, Garwood’s work included print making, poetry, writing, multimedia, and film.

His multi-media piece, “Adagio” was included in the 1996 Venice Biennale’s Xenographia Nomadic Wall.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase during the event.

South pole stories

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Public Library will host David Pablo Cohn at 7 p.m. Thursday as he shares some of his South Pole experiences.

Cohn’s presentation at the library’s Carnegie Reading Room, 1220 Lawerence St., is free and open to the public.

He will discuss how the (sometimes) surprisingly mundane life at the South Pole launched his career as a writer, and some of the twists and turns in his life since then.

In 2010, Cohn left his position as a senior Silicon Valley research scientist to become “the Helpdesk at the Bottom of the World” for a season, fixing jammed printers and rebooting frozen laptops at the U.S. Antarctic Program’s South Pole Station.

Sine then has has worked below deck on a polar icebreaker, launched a farm collective and published two volumes of fiction.

Northwind readings

PORT TOWNSEND — Northwind Reading Series will feature Carol Despeaux Fawcett and David Stallings at 7 p.m. Thursday in Northwind Arts Center.

Suggested donation is $5 to the reading at the center st 701 Water St.

Carol Despeaux Fawcett earned her master of fine arts degree from Goddard College. Her memoir and her poetry have won first place in the Pacific Northwest Writer’s Contest and her current work-in-progress, a fantasy novel, was a finalist.

David Stallings was born in the south and raised in Alaska and Colorado before settling in the Pacific Northwest. Once an academic geographer, he has long worked to promote public transportation in the Puget Sound area.

Osteoporosis seminar

QUILCENE — Jefferson Healthcare physical therapist Mary E. Breckel will present a rehabilitation health education seminar on healthy habits to decrease the progression of existing or potential osteoporosis at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Her informative presentation at the Quilcene Community Center, 294952 U.S. Highway 101, will focus on best practices for the prevention of the disease as well as exercise techniques to protect and strengthen the spine.

Breckel received her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Washington.

Following the presentation, audience members can ask questions and speak directly with Breckel and Mitzi Hazard, manager of Rehabilitation Services & Wellness.

‘Sing-A-Ling’

SEQUIM — An outdoor “Sing-A-Ling” led by Harmonica Pocket has been set for 6:30 p.m. today.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the library.

“Part storytime, part sing-along … the select songs and rhyming stories in this show combine movement, picture books, uplifting acoustic music and an engaging, highly-interactive banter between audience and musicians,” according to a news release.

Backyard birding

SEQUIM — Backyard Birding classes at the Dungeness River Audubon Center will feature “Gulls and Shorebirds” by Bob Boekelheide from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The center is in Railroad Bridge Park at 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The cost of the session is $5 for adults and free for those younger than 18.

Boekelheide will discuss the migrant species that occur in the area, how they use local bays and shores, and a few tidbits of their life stories.

Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series.

SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The shop at 204 W. Bell St. will feature summer fashions, books, jewelry, handbags, small appliances and kitchenware.

White-tagged items will be marked at half-price.

Picnic, auction

SEQUIM — Olympic Nature Experience will host a variety of events from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $5 per person, $15 per family and youth ages 5 and younger are admitted free to the event at Jardin du Soliel, 3932 Sequim-Dungeness Way.

During the event, attendees can bid on one of the artisan-crafted picnic dinners, have a glass of beer, partake in nature-centered activities, and enjoy music.

Family-friendly activities include nature walks, a native plant walk and storytelling.

Those interested can bring a blanket to lay on in the lavender fields.

Local food and drink from Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Port Townsend Brewing Co. & Pacific Pantry will be available.

All proceeds will benefit Olympic Nature Experience.

Accordion social

SEQUIM — An accordion social is planned at Shipley Center from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission to the social at the center, 921 E. Hammond St., is a $2 to $3 suggested donation.

The featured player will be Doris Osgood from Forest Grove, Ore.

Players of all levels are encouraged to bring their accordions and play one to three pieces.

Boat restoration stories

SEQUIM — The Sequim Bay Yacht Club’s general meeting will feature a presentation by Leo Goolden at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Goolden’s presentation at John Wayne Marina’s large assembly room, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road, is free and open to the public.

He will describe his work in restoring the 108-year-old Tally Ho, a sailing vessel he rescued from the scrap yard about a year ago.

Goolden is both a sailor and a ship builder and has applied great rigor in the restoration of the boat.

Plant clinic

SEQUIM — Members of the public are invited to ask Master Gardeners about gardening from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mosaic dance

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Mosaic will host its monthly dance from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The dance is $5, while an optional lunch is $2 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave.

Accompanying caregivers will be admitted for free.

The lunch will feature pork sandwiches, pasta salad, cole slaw, a fruit cup, beverages and a dessert.

She will present at Park View Villas, 1430 Park View Lane.

The book is a young adult fantasy based on her memories of time spent with her grandmother.

She will share her thoughts on turning memoir into fiction, and sharing small bits of true stories as a part of a a fantasy story.

PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Library System’s (NOLS) Books and Libations will open at Camaraderie Cellars at 6 p.m. Thursday.

A pairing of six wines and books will be at the winery at 334 Benson Road.

At each tasting station, participants will sample one book and one of Camaraderie’s artisanal Northwest wines.

Each book has been paired with each of the wines, with titles ranging from classics to sci-fi to literary fiction, matched in tone and intensity to red, white and rose wines.

Valid photo ID must be presented at the door.

The event is co-hosted by the NOLS and Camaraderie Cellars.

Grill-off

FORKS — Members of the public are invited to the “Taste of Forks Grill-Off” at 6 tonight.

Admission is $10 per person and $20 per family for the event at the Forks Assembly of God Church, 81 Huckleberry Lane.

Attendees can sample tailgate barbecue as they compete for the “Top Griller” title, with samplers’ tips determining this year’s winner.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s youth program for an August trip to the Los Angeles Dream Center.
