Officials at the 850-inmate medium- to maximum-security facility were working with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the Monday morning stabbing of the corrections officer.
“An offender stabbed a corrections officer in the neck and face with a pen,” said Fay Gingell, corrections center public information officer.
Gingell said the corrections officer, who wasn’t identified, was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles with non-life-threatening injuries.
Carlos Avalos, 19, stabbed the corrections officer at about 10:15 a.m. Monday, Gingell said, and was put into isolation in the Intensive Management Unit, where he will be interviewed.
The entire prison remained on lockdown Monday afternoon, she added, and all of the volunteer programs and visitations had been canceled for the day.
“The [facility’s] superintendent will determine when we move to normal operations,” Gingell said.
Gingell said the name of the corrections officer would not be released while the assault is still under investigation.
“He’s doing fine,” Gingell added.
Gingell said Avalos is serving a prison sentence until March 2022 for an assault with a deadly weapon charge out of Lewis County.
The last reported assault at Clallam Bay Corrections Center happened Aug. 15, 2013, when authorities said Daniel Edward Johnson stabbed another inmate with a sharpened toothbrush in an attack believed to be gang-related.
Johnson is serving a 41-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the March 3, 2009, murders of his girlfriend and her 1-year-old son.
