Salal, gaultheria shallon, is an understory shrub commonly used in the floral industry. It grows in dense thickets throughout Western Washington and Oregon.
Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene offices during business hours Sept. 4, Oct. 30, Jan. 8 and March 5, said Chris Dowling, special forest products program manager.
A total of 100 permits will be issued with a maximum of 15 permits for each harvest unit, he said.
Fifty permits will be offered from the Quilcene office at 295142 S. U.S. Highway 101 (360-765-2200) for harvest areas located on the east side of Clallam and Jefferson counties and within Mason County.
Twenty-five permits will be offered from the Forks office at 437 Tillicum Lane (360-374-6522) for the west side of Clallam County.
Twenty-five permits will be offered from the Lake Quinault office at 353 S. Shore Road (360-288 2525) for harvest areas within Grays Harbor County and the west side of Jefferson County.
A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply.
Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months.
A valid United States picture identification will be required at the time of purchase, and those buying permits must be at least 18 years old.
Cash or checks will be accepted, but no credit cards or debit cards will be accepted.
Permit holders will be limited to no more than 200 hands per day — about 150 to 250 pounds, depending upon which kind of product they are cutting, Dowling said.
A hand is an industry measurement for about three-fourths of a pound of long salal and about a pound and a quarter for standard salal, he said.
“It’s the amount of salal that can be held in one hand when you’re harvesting,” Dowling said.
Harvest unit boundaries are defined by roads or recognizable land features, and a map of the harvest areas will be distributed with the sale of each permit.
At least one piece of high-visibility clothing is highly recommended while harvesting salal.
