Small fire put out near Lake Sutherland

By Peninsula Daily News staff

PORT ANGELES — A small brush fire south of Lake Sutherland was extinguished by Clallam County Fire District 2 firefighters on Thursday near a logging road on state Department of Natural Resources land.

The fire was about 20-by-20 feet in size and most likely ignited by fireworks, said District 2 Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area at 5:37 p.m. after people in the Lake Sutherland area reported smoke. The district sent 10 firefighters, two trucks and a 3,000-gallon water tender.

DeRousie said the flames were knocked down quickly, and a DNR crew monitored the scene until the fire was fully put out.

“We have very dry conditions, and we are in the fire season,” DeRousie said. “Everyone has the responsibility to be careful with fireworks and campfires.”

One of the district's fire trucks was in line for the Fourth of July parade in downtown Port Angeles when it was dispatched to Lake Sutherland.
