SPORTS: Port Angeles baseball shut out by North Kitsap; other prep baseball reports

PORT ANGELES — Ben Tamm completely shut down the Port Angeles Roughriders in North Kitsap’s 6-0 win Monday at Civic Field.

Tamm struck out six and allowed only two hits in six innings, as the Vikings (6-1, 8-1) rebounded convincingly from their first loss of the season.

Michael Konopaski doubled and Marcus Konopaski and Larsson Chapman singled for the Riders’ other two hits.

“We did not compete at the plate at all, striking out 14 times, six which were looking,” Port Angeles coach Chad Wagner said.

“It was one of the better pitchers [in the Olympic League], but we still have to learn to put the ball in play, especially against a team that had seven errors on Friday when they lost to Bremerton.”

The Riders (2-4) managed only three hits in the game. This after their bats broke out in last week’s home wins over Olympic and Port Townsend.

“We took steps in the right direction last week, and I felt like we just took a step back [against North Kitsap],” Wagner said.

“We are missing five kids due to the orchestra [trip to New York], but that is not an excuse for our loss.”

Port Angeles pitcher Chase Jangula held off the Vikings’ batters until the fourth inning, when North Kitsap broke a 0-0 tie with four runs.

BREMERTON — The Wolves became the third straight victim of the resurgent Trojans on Monday.

Olympic began its Olympic League campaign 1-3 record, but has scored at least 11 runs in its three games since losing to Port Angeles early last week.

Now, the Trojans (4-3, 4-5) have leaped from near the bottom of the standings to fourth place.

Sequim (2-4, 4-4) has fallen to the bottom half of the league, and is now tied for sixth with Port Angeles.

Fred Serrano was 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in the Wolves’ only run.

Sequim only had six hits and committed six errors.

BELFAIR — The Redskins were unable to capitalize in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs in Monday’s Olympic League matchup.

“That was pretty big, because at the time it was 1-0,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

“We could have blown the game open.”

Instead, the Redskins were held without a run, and the Bulldogs (3-4, 6-4) added two scores in the fifth inning to make it a 3-0 game.

Cody Russell pitched six innings for Port Townsend (0-7, 0-8) and struck out seven.

He also had one of the Redskins’ three hits, along with Devon Courtney and Sean Dwyer.
