The appointment by the House Democratic Caucus is in addition to the earlier naming of the new representative of the 6th Congressional District to the House Armed Services Committee.
The 39-year-old Gig Harbor Democrat, a 1992 graduate of Port Angeles High School, also was named last week by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland to serve as an assistant whip.
When he served in the state Senate, representing District 26, Kilmer served on the Economic Development, Trade and Innovation Committee, and on the Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, where he worked on issues related to scientific research and innovation.
Kilmer is the first freshman congressman for Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1979, when Democrat Al Swift of Everett was sworn into office for the 2nd District, which included the North Olympic Peninsula until redistricting in 1992 moved the region into the 6th District of Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair.
Kilmer defeated Republican Bill Driscoll in the Nov. 6 election to succeed Dicks, who did not seek re-election after having held a congressional seat since 1977.
