July 14, 1951
March 23, 2011
On March 23, 2011, John passed on away quietly in his sleep at his home in Sequim after a sudden battle with bone cancer.
John began his journey on July 14, 1951, born to Gerard Theodore and Florence McKinna Fendler in Brooklyn, New York. The family packed up and moved west, befriending fellow New Yorker John Bolewicki and settling on the Olympic Peninsula in 1953.
Attending Queen of Angels, he became an alter boy. John joined the Boy Scouts in 1960, and by 1968 had achieved Eagle Scout.
After graduating from Port Angeles High School in 1970, John proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1971, as a Field Medical Technician. He was recognized as Hospital Corpsman Third Class in 1973.
Traveling around the world from the Philippines to Japan and Vietnam on the USS Samuel Gompers, John was honorably discharged after serving seven years for his Country.
John loved and lived for his wife, Marcie Carlene Amundson-Minker-Rose, whom he married on March 12, 1988, with a daily note professing his love for her. They recently celebrated their 23rd anniversary.
From goat trails to mushroom trails, John’s passion for the outdoors kept them fishing, hiking and camping with lifetime friends Dwight Honaker and Bob and Lynette Brooks.
Of all the values one can have, John always put family first. A strong work ethic and 24 years at the Port Townsend paper mill, John created many friends along the way.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Florence; cousin, Florence Weed; and father-in-law, Carl E. Amundson.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Marcie; children, Teresa and Michael; grandchildren, Stephanie, Rhiannen, Sarah and Jordynn; great-grandchild, Xylis; sisters, Marion Fendler and Ann Marie Fendler-Horsly, and husband, Lue; brother, Paul Fendler; nephew, Thomas; nieces, Friday and Samantha; mother, Mary Fendler; brother, John Bailey; sister, Jancise Otonie, and spouses; aunt, Marion Nerling; mother-in-law, Ramona Amundson; brother-in-law, Carl E. Amundson, and wife, Marleen; sister-in-law, Mary Lea Lindstrom, and husband, David, and families.
Potluck memorial services have been set for April 9, 2011, at Lazy Acres Clubhouse at 111 Dryke Road, Sequim, at 2 p.m., and a small potluck gathering at the Hilltop Tavern, 2510 West Sims Way in Port Townsend, on April 10, 2011, 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County at 540 East Eighth Street in Port Angeles, and/or the Boy Scouts of Port Angeles.
