She was born September 10, 1952, in Port Angeles to William and Vivian Beth Heckman. Her mother preceded her in death. Her father still resides in Port Angeles.

Growing up in Port Angeles, Valerie was very involved with the Rainbow Girls of the Masonic Lodge.

She graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1970, from Peninsula College in 1972 and from University of Washington's cytology course in 1973.

Valerie has been a devoted wife and mother. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert L. Maxfield, on September 8, 1973.

Valerie worked as a cytotechnologist for several years until moving to Aberdeen, Washington, in 1976.

In 2003, they moved from Grays Harbor to Warrenton, Oregon, where Bob currently resides.

A lifelong diabetic, Valerie received a kidney from her husband in 2010. When he donated the kidney, he reminded her that in 1968 she stole his heart.

After settling in Grays Harbor, Valerie and Bob were active in the First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen, where Valerie also worked as wedding coordinator for 10 years and spent many years serving in the Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus group as a lay director of the spiritual retreat, later becoming president.

Valerie also was employed as Administrative Assistant to the President of Grays Harbor Paper until her retirement in 2000.

Valuing her faith, her friends and her family above all else, she cherished each moment that she was spent with loved ones.

Valerie loved camping and traveling, especially enjoying the RV outings with the Sunseekers RV club. She previously held the position of treasurer for this group.

In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by her son, Ryan E. Maxfield, of San Diego, California; daughter, Lacey L. Shaw, son-in-law, Ian Shaw, and grandson, Patrick Shaw, all of Columbus, Montana; and her sister, Vickie S. Willson, of Renton, Washington.
