Sgt. Randy Pieper said a sheriff's deputy recovered the Ruger GP100 revolver about 100 feet north of the trail on the east side of Mudd Creek, which is about a quarter mile east of Kitchen-Dick Road, after a trail user reported it at about 1:45 p.m.
Alongside the gun were two "speed loaders." Each was full, with six bullets, he said.
Pieper figures the unregistered gun was stolen since it was discarded, but said there is no evidence that it was used in a crime.
"There's no reports of anybody shooting, no reports of anybody being wounded," he said.
No evidence of use
Pieper also said there was no evidence of the gun being used nearby or anywhere along the trail.
He added that there have also been no reports of a stolen gun.
A speed loader allows the bullets to be loaded in a revolver at once, Pieper said.
