The robber -- a white man with scruffy, red facial hair who is believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, about six-feet tall and weighing 150 pounds -- drew a handgun at about 7:48 p.m. and demanded that employees of the pharmacy at 110 Plaza St., in Port Angeles give him behind-the-counter drugs, said Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith.
The suspect made off with OxyContin and "some generic Percocet" -- both pain relievers -- before fleeing on foot south toward Peninsula Golf Club.
A police dog tracked a scent but lost it on pavement near DelGuzzi Drive, Smith said, and was unable to locate the man.
Police are pursuing leads today, Smith said.
The man was wearing a black hooded coat with an unknown emblem on the left side, camouflage pants and black military boots.
Smith said people may steal pharmaceutical drugs because "they are worth money, they use them recreationally, they are addicted, and [any] combination thereof."
The deputy chief declined to say how much was stolen from the pharmacy.
The Clallam County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol, State Patrol and a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles assisted Port Angeles police in the search.
