PORT ANGELES -- A $5,000 grant from The Home Depot will fund a makeover of Serenity House's Dream Center on Saturday.

The interior of the Dream Center -- a drop-in center for at-risk or homeless youth at 535 E. First St., in Port Angeles -- will be fixed up by volunteers from the The Home Depot in Sequim, Dream Center staff and clients and others.

The teams of volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today on the interior improvements, said Pam Olson, case manager.

"They've already done a lot of preparation work," Olson said. "The finishing touches will be put on Saturday."

In addition to the work, the team will set up a tent for food, music and other activities, she said.

"It will be a festival-like atmosphere."

The grant was given by The Home Depot, 1145 W. Washington St., in Sequim as a community project.

"The Dream Center is excited and very honored to be receiving such a large grant from Home Depot, and we're extremely thankful to the Sequim Home Depot staff and volunteers for their service," said Alona Koehler, lead case manager.

The Dream Center, the youth outreach flagship of the Serenity House, is in its fifth year of operation.

Exterior renovations to the Dream Center have been under way as a separate project.

More than 200 young people have gone to the center for help with food, clothing, laundry and other needs.

"We have worked very hard to focus on the key priorities of safe housing and education and work opportunities," said Shirley Anderson, the Serenity House deputy director overseeing the youth programs.
