JOYCE -- A seventh-grader from Forks baked the best blackberry pie at the Joyce Daze Wild Blackberry Festival, judges decided Saturday, while a Port Orchard man won the award for best overall facial hair in the beard and mustache contest.

The two contests were part of a one-day celebration of wild blackberries and Joyce heritage.

Kayla Olsen, 12, picked wild berries from her grandmother's Joyce property for the pie that won first place -- and 100 Port Angeles Downtown Dollars -- at the festival's pie contest.

The second place winner, Marie Adkins of Joyce, works at the Blackberry Cafe.

The third-place winner was Anne Shaffer of Port Angeles.

Three judges savored the 19 pies before announcing the winners at the contest, sponsored by the Peninsula Daily News.

The overall winner in the beard and mustache contest was Edward Angelbok of Port Orchard, who also won the prize for best beard, said Rae Leiper, festival publicity chairwoman.

Winning second place in the beard category was Burke Kenny of Olympia. The third-place winner was Rick Broderson of Seiku.

Kevin Barker of Port Angeles took first place in the goatee contest, with David Hostvedt of Port Angeles coming in second, and Dave Farrington of Sequim, third.

The best mustache was worn by Dave Sutton of Port Angeles. Second place went to Doug Timmons of Port Angeles, and third to Monte Higday of Sequim.

Winning the "anything goes" division of the contest was Don Olmstead of Port Angeles. Jerry Reid of Port Angeles won second place, while Bill Glass of Port Angeles took third place.

Judges were Jeff Wells of Rite Bros. Aviation, Clallam County Commissioner Mike Dougherty and Jim Hunt.

The contest was sponsored by Rite Bros. Aviation, Jane Childers' BoBaggins Daycare Inc. and Swain's General Store.

Prizes were an engraved ax and hat for first place, a fish baking plank and hat for second and a back scratcher massager and bandana for third.

The overall winner received a wood carving by local artist Eric Benson.

In the Grand Parade through Joyce, the Sequim Irrigation Festival float won the Best of Show award.

The Judge's Choice award went to Ed Fisher and his 1927 Graham Yellow Beer truck. The Wild Blackberry Award was given to Dick Amundson and his 1953 Chevy pick-up.

Chairman's Choice was the Forks Fourth of July Festival float. Most Congenial was the Joyce Bible Church -- Awana Club float.
