Events galore to entertain on Fourth of July

Activities to get into the patriotic spirit will be available throughout the North Olympic Peninsula on Friday.

Fourth of July events from fairs to fireworks will offer something for everyone.

Forks
In Forks, celebration of Independence Day takes more than one day.

Forks Old-Fashioned Fourth of July will begin on Thursday and end Sunday.

An art show will begin at noon each day beginning on Thursday at the state Department of Natural Resource Center, 411 Tillicum Lane.

On Friday, the Grand Parade will head down Main Street at noon.

The Salmon Bake, sponsored by the Forks Lions Club, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Tillicum Park.

Cars will be destroyed at the Demolition Derby at Tillicum Park Arena.

The gates will open at 2 p.m. Friday, and tickets are $8 for spectators.

Music in the Park will be from 6:30 p.m. until dusk at Tillicum Park when the fireworks show will begin.

The Surfing and Kayaking Youth Camp will be 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in LaPush.

The West End Thunder Drag races will begin at the Forks Municipal Airport at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A surfing competition will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, while Kiddies Play Day at Tillicum Park will run from noon to 2 p.m. that day

Port Angeles
The Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce's Wave Broadband Fourth of July Celebrations will end with a bang at 10 a.m. Friday with a fireworks show.

It will begin at about 3 p.m., when local vendors will set up food, craft and inflatable toys for all to enjoy at City Pier.

The Kitsap Bank Fourth of July Parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Lincoln and Fourth streets.

The parade will travel down Lincoln, turn onto First Street and end at Valley Street.

Parade applications can be picked up from Kitsap Bank, 716 E. Front St., or at the Regional Chamber of Commerce office at 121 E. Railroad Ave.

There is no entry fee.

Miss Washington, Harasyn Sandell — a Sequim native — will ride in the Meatball Float in the parade.

Musical entertainment will be set up at City Pier with Luck of the Draw playing at 3 p.m., Sequimarimba at 4:30 p.m., Manteca at 7 p.m. and Soul Shakers at 8:30 p.m.

The best viewing locations will be along the Olympic Discovery Trail and from the City Pier.

Access to the trail in the area of Francis Street will not be available because the staging area of the fireworks show will be off limits to the public.

Fort Worden
Port Townsend events will culminate with a fireworks show above Fort Worden State Park at about 10 p.m. Friday.

Events will begin with the Centrum Fiddle Concert in Fort Worden State Park's McCurdy Pavilion at 1:30 p.m.

Food will be available throughout the park from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Games for children will start at 6 p.m. on the Commons, followed by the Rotary pinball game on the Castle lawn.

Both will continue until 8 p.m.

Because Fort Worden parking is limited, Jefferson Transit will offer shuttle bus service to the park from the Park and Ride Haines Place and state Highway 20, beginning at 5 p.m.

Shuttles will run throughout the evening until 30 minutes after the completion of the fireworks show.

Regular fares of $1.25 for a day pass will apply.

Port Townsend
Port Townsend Sunrise Rotary Club members Kevin Tuuri and Ted DeBray will compete in the first annual "Fourth Food Fest" at Union Wharf at Water and Taylor streets on Friday.

Tuuri will make his pancake recipe.

DeBray will use his "Fourth Franks" recipe.

Students from Port Townsend High School will play live music.

Finished goods will be for sale for $5 per plate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Proceeds will go to Shelter Box USA, which provides shelter to survivors of natural disasters.

Those who sample the food can vote on their favorite dishes.

The winner of the food competition will be announced at the club's fireworks show at dusk at Fort Worden State Park.

Sequim
A free "Patriotic Salute to America" will be at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Road, at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Sequim City Band will be directed by Sanford Feibus, and the Olympic Peninsula Men's Chorus will be directed by Gary McRoberts and Ed Grimes

Among the sing-along tunes will be "God Bless America," "America the Beautiful," "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Yankee Doodle."

Veterans will be acknowledged at the event.

Spectators are encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and bring a chair or blanket to sit on.

Carlsborg
A live music festival will be held at Greywolf Elementary School, 171 Carlsborg Road, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Live music will include rap, rock 'n' roll, fiddling and bluegrass.

Swing dancing at 3 p.m. will include free dance lessons.

The festival will also feature a barbecue, children's activities, bounce houses, arts and crafts and food.

Admission is free.

Neah Bay
A Fourth of July celebration in Neah Bay will begin with a parade through town at 11 a.m. Friday.

Anyone may join in the parade, which will begin at the east side of Washburn's General Store.

A Fabric Arts and Quilt Show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Makah Marina Conference Center.

A fireworks display, sponsored by the Makah tribe, is planned at about 10:20 p.m.

The best place to view the fireworks will be from Bayview Avenue.

Olympic National Park
Olympic National Park will have campgrounds, trails and roads open for the Fourth of July weekend.

Many areas above 3,000 feet remain covered in snow.

Anyone planning to hike in the park should check for current trail condition reports at any visitor center or ranger station or by phoning the Wilderness Information Center at 360-565-3100.
