Free entertainment — with some science mixed in — is part of the "Catch the Reading Bug" summer reading program among the branches in Sequim, Port Angeles, Clallam Bay and Forks.
The program includes games and prizes for young people who spend 15 to 30 minutes a day reading, with or without grownups.
Among the highlights is the arrival this Wednesday of Olympia magic man Jeff Evans, aka "Bug Boy."
He'll bring Hercules, his "world's strongest flea," to the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., for a show of tricks and insect intelligence at 10:30 a.m.
"He is fabulous. It's such a coup to have him," said Keitha Owen, Sequim branch manager.
"He does magic, but he ties it in to libraries and kids."
The 45-minute show, "The Magical Adventures of Bug Boy," also features Evans reaching into a swarm of bees in a jar to perform a card trick.
The performance is geared toward children ages 5 and up, as are the rest of the library events.
On July 9, the Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters are scheduled to visit the Sequim branch to introduce youngsters to their equipment.
On July 16, musician and puppeteer Linda Severt will entertain; on July 23 the Pacific Science Center of Seattle will present an interactive show and on July 30 Mary Shaver will stage "Cinderella and the Bug Brigade" with highly animated marionettes.
All programs start at 10:30 a.m.
Port Angeles
At the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., storytellers Dennis Duncan and Daddy Don will offer bug tales on July 10.
Children are invited to drop in and create their own versions of insects — using their own recycled materials or those provided by the library — on July 17.
On July 24, the show is titled "Insect Safari" and stars the creatures local resident Don Ehlen has been collecting since he was 5 years old.
All programs start at 2:30 p.m.
Forks
At the Forks Library, 171 Forks Ave. South, festivities start Tuesday with "All about Butterflies," librarian Christie Stallman's craft and science show for kids of any age.
On July 9, expert juggler and librarian Rebecca Barker will share her skills with children.
The final Forks program of the summer will come on July 24 as Ehlen presents his "Insect Safari."
Each program will start at 5:30 p.m.
Clallam Bay
At the Clallam Bay Library on state Highway 112, the summer program includes the same reading-incentive game as the other branches, plus a craft class for children every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Owen urged children and their parents to try out the activities that are part of "Catch the Reading Bug:" "Take a walk and identify three bugs" and create an "insect" out of materials lying around the house and yard.
"We'll display it in the library," she said. "We already have some up."
She encouraged all children, including those who aren't yet reading to themselves, to take part in the summer program.
They can come to the library to pick up the game sheet and find books to read along with parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents.
