PORT ANGELES — Blue ribbons adorn light and sign poles in downtown Port Angeles in honor of National Police Week.

Clallam County Sheriff's Department will honor law enforcement officers who died across the nation in the line of duty at a memorial service at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The event, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., will also honor slain Clallam County Sheriff's Deputy Wally Davis.

Davis was shot to death while answering a disturbance call in east Port Angeles on Aug. 5, 2000.

"This is a week we choose to remember Wally," Sheriff Bill Benedict said.

"I think this week is especially important to us because we are the only law enforcement agency in the area to lose an officer in the line of duty recently."

Thursday is Peace Officers' Memorial Day — which was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy — and falls in the middle of National Police Week.

The Sheriff's Department Honor Guard will present the colors, a proclamation from the county commissioners will be read, and Benedict will make a short address.

Other departments
Port Angeles Police Department will participate in the ceremony and have blue ribbons affixed to their aerials this week to recognize the fallen.

Forks Police Department, Sequim Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and Port Townsend Police Department also will recognize the slain officers with ribbons but are not planning any formal ceremonies.

After the Thursday ceremony, there will be a 21 bell salute at the replica of the Liberty Bell located in Veteran's Memorial Park, 217 S. Lincoln St. to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

The ceremonies are open to the public.

Local residents may also show support for local agencies by tying blue ribbons on their vehicles, at their homes or places of business, Benedict said.

Members of the public are also encouraged to show their support by using blue porch lights.

The week from Sunday through Saturday has been proclaimed National Police Week by the Clallam County commissioners, Port Angeles City Council, Jefferson County commissioners and Port Townsend City Council.
