Today also is primary election day in Jefferson County with contests up for Port of Port Townsend District 1 commissioner and Jefferson County Fire Protection District 1.
As of Monday, the Jefferson County Auditor's Office had received 30.42 percent of the ballots for the all-mail primary election, said Karen Cartmel, chief deputy auditor in charge of elections, adding that ballots, mailed on Aug. 1, were slow to come in.
Of the 14,223 sent out, 4,327 ballots have been returned, with 23 returned ballots containing no signature or a questionable signature.
Voters sending in ballots with signature problems were to be sent letters or given a phone call from the auditor's office staff.
Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. or postmarked today.
Voters can mail ballots, take them to the auditor's office at the Jefferson County Courthouse or place them in the ballot drop box behind the courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.
The auditor's office opens at 7 a.m. and balloting at the office closes at 8 p.m., Cartmel said.
Running in the port commissioner race are Frank Benskin, John Collins and Forrest Rambo.
In the fire district contest are Terry G. Heineman, Pete Langley and Zane Wyll.
