All-mail primary elections end in Clallam, Jefferson counties today

Voters have until 8 p.m. today to cast ballots candidates for Clallam County Superior Court judge and Port Angeles City Council, as well as in the District 1 county commission race.

On Monday, 1,176 more ballots were returned, bringing the total to 13,209, or just shy of 30 percent of the 44,467 mailed to voters.

Voters can deposit ballots in drop boxes at these locations:

  • Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles (auditor's office or outdoor drive-up drop box).

  • Sequim Motor Vehicle Licensing Office, 1001 E. Washington St., Suite 3 (drop box).

  • Forks District Court, 500 E. Division St., Forks (drop box).

    They also can return ballots by mail. Mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than today.

    Voters should check with their local post office to learn when the day's last mail will be collected from boxes.

    Clallam County Auditor Patty Rosand will make the first count of ballots at 8 p.m. today.

    She said workers hope to include all ballots returned by mail to the auditor's office today.

    The next ballot count will take place on Friday, although the election will not be certified until Sept. 5.

    Jefferson County
    Today also is primary election day in Jefferson County with contests up for Port of Port Townsend District 1 commissioner and Jefferson County Fire Protection District 1.

    As of Monday, the Jefferson County Auditor's Office had received 30.42 percent of the ballots for the all-mail primary election, said Karen Cartmel, chief deputy auditor in charge of elections, adding that ballots, mailed on Aug. 1, were slow to come in.

    Of the 14,223 sent out, 4,327 ballots have been returned, with 23 returned ballots containing no signature or a questionable signature.

    Voters sending in ballots with signature problems were to be sent letters or given a phone call from the auditor's office staff.

    Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. or postmarked today.

    Voters can mail ballots, take them to the auditor's office at the Jefferson County Courthouse or place them in the ballot drop box behind the courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.

    The auditor's office opens at 7 a.m. and balloting at the office closes at 8 p.m., Cartmel said.

    Running in the port commissioner race are Frank Benskin, John Collins and Forrest Rambo.

    In the fire district contest are Terry G. Heineman, Pete Langley and Zane Wyll.
