PORT ANGELES — A small brush fire burned on the Rayonier property bluffs east of the Ennis Creek mouth on Monday afternoon but was stopped quickly by fire crews.

Two Port Angeles Fire Department fire engines with assistance from a Clallam County Fire District No. 2 pumper truck and another support vehicle responded to the fast-moving fire, which was reported at about 4:30 p.m.

“The wind was pushing it, and we were worried it would get big real quick. We wanted to get in front before it went on a run,” said Port Angeles Fire Department Lt. Mike Sanders.

The fire was quickly contained, and by 5:30 p.m., the 13 firefighters on scene were mopping up remaining embers.

Sanders said firefighters found a tent and evidence of a homeless encampment that burned in the fire, but was uncertain if the fire began at that location.
