WEEKEND: Contra dance season kicks up its heels this weekend; gets started in Sequim today

Peninsula Daily News

A busy month lies ahead for contra dancers, as callers and bands are scheduled across the North Olympic Peninsula.

“We are going to be treated to a luxury level of good contra dancing over the next month,” said Tom Shindler with Black Diamond Dance.

The band Power House will play with Amy Carroll calling a show at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Perpetual e-Motion, a band Shindler called “amazing,” will play and Vermont caller Will Mentor will lead the dancers at a special dance Monday in the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road in Port Angeles, at 6:30 p.m.

“These guys were a huge hit last year,” Shindler said. “Don't miss them this year.”

Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and teens and $5 for children younger than 13.

The two upcoming dances kick off the contra club's busy dance card, as it also hosts a pair of special dances next month.

The Black Diamond dancers will open their regular season of first Saturday dances next week, with Red Crow playing and Laura Me Smith calling at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

Suggested donation is $8, $4 for children younger than 18.

Internationally acclaimed contra caller Colin Hume leads a dance with music from the Rosewind Country Dance Band in Black Diamond at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16.
