WEEKEND: 'Bach to Broadway' tunes to be performed this Sunday in Port Angeles

Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — In a dress rehearsal and send-off for their forthcoming trip abroad, the Port Angeles Symphony Players will unveil their new program, “Bach to Broadway,” at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The performers — who include Kate Southard-Dean, JoDee Ahmann, Wendy Clark, Lilias Green, Marlene Moore, Liam Getzin, Gay Knutson, Phil Morgan-Ellis and singer Olivia Shea — will step up for this afternoon of music at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The concert will run about an hour and a half, estimated Knutson, the players' longtime cellist and publicist.

And the music, like this ensemble, will travel the world. Sunday afternoon will go from classics by Bach, Mozart, Grieg and Brahms to show tunes from Broadway — and for good measure, the group will play three Celtic-inspired pieces, which Jesse Ahmann wrote for this summer's tour.

Admission by donation

Admission to Sunday's concert will be by donation, with proceeds to help the Port Angeles Symphony Players with travel expenses on their summer “Celtic Circle” tour of London, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

The players will depart June 25.

This nine-member ensemble includes musicians from the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra but does not receive funding from the symphony's board of directors, Knutson noted, adding that this is the players' 10th international tour since they began going abroad in 1985.
