“We're continuing to investigate the case, and there may be more facts we discover,” said Brian Smith, deputy police chief.
Police said Stanton Naccarato, 55, was stabbed at about noon Monday.
He remained in Olympic Medical Center on Thursday in satisfactory condition, hospital spokeswoman Bobby Beeman said.
Naccarato told police he walked to OMC after he realized he had been stabbed.
Officers investigating the case have received about a dozen tips about men matching the attacker's description and have ruled them all out as suspects, Smith said.
Naccarato told police he was walking on the north side of the heavily wooded Jessie Webster Park off East Second Street when he was approached by a 30- to 35-year-old man who asked Naccarato for a cigarette.
When Naccarato told the other man he didn't have a cigarette, Naccarato turned away and felt a “bump” from behind him, police said.
Naccarato didn't realize he had been stabbed until he arrived at a nearby gas station and saw the blood, Smith has said.
Naccarato told police he had never seen the other man before and thought he was “new to town.”
The man police are seeking is described as Caucasian and between 5-foot-11 and 6 feet tall.
He has shoulder-length light-brown hair with some blond highlights, police said.
He was last seen walking eastbound on Second Street wearing jeans and a dark-blue hooded sweatshirt.
