Mackley, 41, will serve the remainder of Holly Rose’s four-year term through 2017.
Rose resigned from the board in March after serving three months. She was re-elected to Position 1 in the November 2013 general election.
She had served on the board since her election in November 2009.
The four remaining members of the School Board appointed Mackley at a board meeting Thursday.
Mackley will join board members Sandy Criss, Trisha Haggerty and Dara Peppard and board Chairwoman Susan Hopper at meetings beginning in May.
The board includes two non-voting student board members: junior class representative Jennifer Criss and senior class representative Shannon Williams.
Mackley is the father of two children in district schools, with two younger children who will someday enter the district, Hopper said.
“He was originally tapped for the strategic plan committee,” she said.
Hopper said that when Rose announced her departure, board members asked Mackley to apply for the position.
“He has a lot of background that will lend itself to working with the board,” she said.
Mackley, an employee of Olympic National Park, earned a Bachelor of Science in parks and recreation management and has been a team member and leader of river expeditions worldwide.
