BOOM! Elwha River free for first time in a century

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The final remnant of Glines Canyon Dam, once a 210-foot-tall concrete monolith blocking the upper Elwha River, was exploded at 4:12 this afternoon.

"It's done," said an Olympic National Park spokeswoman.

The removal of the final 30 feet of dam means the Elwha River is fully free for the first time since the lower (and already removed) Elwha Dam was completed in 1913.
