PORT ANGELES — With their summer recess over, contra dances with live fiddle music return this weekend to the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road, and everyone, regardless of dance experience, is invited to join in.
This first dance of the new season will start with a beginners' workshop and refresher at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
That's included in the price of admission, which is $7 for adults and $3 for youngsters — or dancers may bring goodies to share during the break.
The Seattle-based Michael Karcher is the evening's dance caller, while Sandy Bradley and Laurie Andres will supply the live music.
They're two members of the Fixations, a trio that has played many a Black Diamond dance.
Bradley and Andres are noted for infusing dance floors — at contra dance camps and festivals around the country — with their joy. And Karcher, for his part, served as the caller at last season's final contra dance.
“Everyone loved his calling, so we had to have him back,” said coordinator Tom Shindler.
“In addition to a great band and caller, we have the funnest, friendliest folks to dance with anywhere,” he promised.
Dances will continue each month into fall, winter and spring at the Black Diamond Community Hall, which is 2 miles south of town via Pine Street.
The Black Diamond Fiddle Club will play the Bob Boardman Memorial Dance on Oct. 5.
More gatherings are set for Nov. 2, Nov. 18, Dec. 7, Jan. 4, Feb. 1, March 1, April 5 and May 3.
