Port Angeles workshop to focus on strengthening families

PORT ANGELES — Registration is being accepted now for a program for parents and youth of 10 to 14 years old offered by The Answer For Youth at Stevens Middle School.

The free Strengthening Families Program will begin Tuesday, March 19, and continue for seven weekly sessions, each from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the school at 1139 W. 14th St.

Registration is preferred by Tuesday.

The program, which is offered to Port Angeles School District students and families, is not a school-sponsored activity.

Washington State University Extension staff and instructors have provided assistance and assistance for Strengthening Families programs since 2002.

The program will include family discussions and games, a free meal, childcare, door prizes, parent discussion and youth activities.

There will be no class during spring break week.

Program facilitators will coach parents and guardians on how best to help children prepare for the teen years, avoid problems with drugs and alcohol, and strengthen family communications.

Adults will learn what youth are like, making rules and consequences, how to solve problems with youth, and ways to show love and support.

Youth will learn tips on handling frustration, resisting peer pressure, appreciating parent and caregivers and getting along with others.

Families will participate in activities and games, discuss what makes a family strong and solve problems together.
