Friday’s 8 a.m. blaze did an estimated $100,000 worth of damage to the house at 121 Windship Drive, firefighters said.
The home’s residents, who were not identified, got out without injury and are now staying with friends until their home is repaired, according to Keppie Keplinger, spokeswoman for East Jefferson Fire-Rescue.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation this weekend. It is believed to have started between the upstairs and downstairs floors sometime after the fire in the fireplace had died down, firefighters said.
When the 23 firefighters from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue and Indian Island Station 91 arrived at the house, its east side was engulfed in flames, firefighters said.
One of the residents of the home reportedly used a hose on the roof of the wooden structure after flames broke out.
The fire was extinguished by 8:23 a.m., said Chief Gordon Pomeroy of East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, who credited the crews for a fast response, saying that saved 90 percent of the house.
Crews remained at the house for salvage and cleanup about an additional three hours.
