UPDATE: Woman hurt in Highway 101 wreck east of Port Angeles in serious condition in Seattle hospital — corrected
Stoddard Hayes has a show now at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center titled “The Open Circle,” in which the works blend oil paint, transparent glazes — and spores from fungi growing under her trees in West Linn, Ore.
The artist will explore the use of such unusual media in her class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $35, or $25 for high school and college students with identification.
“People taking the workshop are encouraged to start collecting ephemera to embed,” Stoddard Hayes noted, “as well as various papers and natural items such as leaves and other lightly textured items. Antique linens or other assorted things from thrift stores are welcome.”
The workshop is a time for chance and experimentation, she added.
“Come with an open mind. You will be working on many panels at once, so you will leave with a series of images you can build on.”
The nonprofit Port Angeles Fine Arts Center is presenting Stoddard Hayes’ class at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., in conjunction with her “Open Circle” show, which is at the arts center at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. through Feb. 17.
Three hours with a professional artist of this painter’s caliber is “dirt cheap,” said Robin Anderson, executive director of the fine arts center.
“People usually pay hundreds of dollars” for such a workshop.
Stoddard Hayes “has developed really unique techniques,” with her varied materials, Anderson added.
The artist herself, who has worked in Aix-en-Provence, France, as well as in Sitka, Alaska, said she uses all manner of brushes, printmaking methods and her bare hands to paint.
To register for Stoddard Hayes’ workshop, phone the arts center at 360-457-3532.
For information about other activities, visit www.PAFAC.org or visit the center, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
