EVERETT — The Snohomish County Public Utility District still needs a final environmental impact study and a federal license, but it hopes to put turbines in Admiralty Inlet as soon as the middle of 2014 to start generating electricity from tidal power.
A draft study from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said the project would not harm Puget Sound. But, it may still face challenges from environmental groups and an underwater cable company.
The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/VrTeUt ) reports that the project is expected to cost more than $20 million. The PUD has received an Energy Department grant for $10 million.
Two turbines would generate about a megawatt of power or enough electricity for about 600 homes.
The current is strong through Admiralty Inlet, the strait between Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula.
