Port Angeles Food Bank receives van full of donations

Between 200 and 300 people donated items during the drive in September, said Eileen Schmitz, widow of the founder of JACE The Real Estate Co.
“This was the largest amount we've ever gotten,” Schmitz said.
“And we still have another load to send off to Sequim.”
The drive collected items such as shampoo, soap, baby supplies, paper towels and toilet paper, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products and pet supplies — anything useful but food — solicited for food banks in Port Angeles and Sequim.
A van-load is expected to be picked up by the Sequim Food Bank next week, Schmitz said.
The drive, the eighth annual, honored Jace Schmitz, who started the drive. He died in January.
Sulene Krause, administrative manager of the Port Angeles Food Bank, received the donations at the real estate firm's Port Angeles office at 1234 E. Front St.
Krause said the donation of “dignity items” fills a very specific need at the food bank with items the agency usually doesn't get.
Mark and Shelley Shamp of Port Angeles, who have four children, won the drawing for a child-sized, 64-square-foot log playhouse built by John Robertson, husband of Kimi Robertson, a JACE real estate agent.
